Powell’s Growth On Offense Earns Him POTW Award

by Sebastian Abdon Ibarra

Baden Powell earned USPHL Premier West Region Player Of The Week honors for his work in the Jr Reign’s two wins against the San Diego Sabers last week. Powell was recognized for his two way play as well as adding four assists in both games.

Powell has been an integral part of a Jr Reign defense that has been one of the most improved aspects of this team since the beginning of the season. It has been one of the main reasons for the success of the OJR on their current lengthy winning streak. In their first eight games, the OJR surrendered four goals in five separate games. Since then, they have yet to allow an opponent to reach the four goal mark in the last 11 games.

Powell’s development of his offensive game has been a boon for the Jr Reign. The two goals he assisted on were the difference in a 3-2 victory over the Sabers on Nov. 3. He would tack on two more assists the next game in a 7-3 victory. His four points in the series were the most he’s recorded in a two game stretch this season, and was an exclamation point on a five game scoring streak that started back on Oct. 22. His eight points over that time is exactly the type of progression that is exciting to see for a second year player.
