Ontario Jr Reign Fall Short To Roughnecks

by Sebastian Abdon Ibarra

The Ontario Jr Reign (4-3-0) were unable to hand the Bakersfield Roughnecks (3-0-0) their first loss of the season in front of the home fans at Ontario Center Ice. It was a tight and competitive contest throughout and one that might have ended differently if not for the excellent performance from the Roughnecks’ netminder.

The Jr Reign got as good of a start as they could have hoped for, they kept the Roughnecks off the scoreboard and outshot them 15-11 in the first period. Ontario’s smart and aggressive play would pay off big time when Kaedin Larocque-Wolf, with assists from Rhys Doyle and Tristan Lam, would capitalize on the powerplay with under five minutes remaining in the first period to give the Jr Reign a 1-0 lead. However, Bakersfield would somehow find a way to tie the game up in the literal last second of the first period that shifted momentum away from Ontario.

However, there would be no signs of giving up for this Jr Reign squad as they continued their attack on the Bakersfield defense all night long. The Ontario offense supplied a very consistent attack all night long, with 15 shots on goal in every single period of the contest. Even when another Bakersfield goal gave the Jr Reign their first deficit of the night, there was no sign of giving up for this Jr Reign squad.

A tip of the cap is in order for the Roughnecks’ netminder who kept the puck out of the net all night long. With Ontario outshooting Bakersfield 45-33 in this contest, Connor Dumesnil had a long night in front of the net. Time after time he was able to survive the Jr Reign’s onslaught of offensive attacks, putting up a ridiculous .978 save percentage on those 45 shots on goal.

The performance put up by Ontario’s defense and goalie Josh Henson was nothing to scoff at either as they snuffed out Bakersfield’s offense after the second period and gave the Ontario offense their continued chances at the net.

Larocque-Wolf led all Ontario scorers in this one with goal number 10 on the season. Henson improved his stat line this season with 31 saves and a .939 save percentage. David Dumesnil and Francois-Xavier Marois scored the goals for Bakersfield in this one. Connor Dumesnil picked up the win for the Roughnecks and Henson recorded the loss for the Jr Reign.
