Ontario Jr Reign and Fresno Monsters Fight for First

by Sebastian Abdon Ibarra

The first place Ontario Jr Reign (16-4-0) are set to take on the second place Fresno Monsters (14-1-0) this holiday weekend. It is shaping up to be an exciting matchup in a series that will decide who leaves Ontario Center Ice Arena with first place bragging rights in the Pacific.

It will be the first meeting between the two elite teams in the Pacific division this season. Both have been playing their best hockey as of late, with the Monsters winning nine of their last 10 and the Jr Reign riding a 12 game winning streak.

Looking at the numbers, both teams are almost identical in terms of goals scored and goals allowed. Fresno has +70 goal differential, while the Jr Reign is right behind that mark with a +67. The Monsters are scoring at a higher clip, averaging 7.7 goals compared to Ontario’s 5.3. However, the Jr Reign have been better defensively having only allowed a measly 1.9 goals against per game compared to Fresno’s three.

Home ice advantage and special teams prowess are the two biggest advantages the Jr Reign will need to capitalize on. Ontario boasts the USPHL's best power play, with a 36% conversion rate and the leagues 4th best Penalty Kill at (92%) compared to Fresno's PP (28.6 - 7th) and PK (86.8% - 13th)
