OJR Stun Roughnecks in Overtime Thriller

by Sebastian Abdon Ibarra

The Ontario Jr Reign won a knock-down drag-out fight in Bakersfield on Friday night, winning by a score of 2-1 against the Roughnecks. Rhys Doyle was the hero for Ontario on this night. The leading assist leader for the Jr Reign took it upon himself this time and scored the walk-off goal all on his own.

Defense was the name of the game for both sides in this game, with not much offense to speak of. It was a beautiful brand of hockey on display, with both sides playing with discipline and precision as evident by the three total penalties on the night. It was a very even battle between these two teams throughout the match, with Ontario’s 39 shots on goal only besting Bakersifled’s total by five.

When instances of offense did occur, they came and went in a flash. Thirty one minutes would pass until the first goal was scored by Bakersfield, and it would take the Jr Reign about 15 more to even the score. When Ontario has been in need of a score this season there is one man they look to, and that's the man wearing #38. Kaedin Larocque-Wolfe extended his scoring streak to nine straight games, but more importantly, he made sure the Jr Reign would not be shut out for the first time this season. Larocque-Wolfe’s nine straight games with a point is his second-longest streak this season, only behind the 12 games between Oct. 22 and Nov. 25.

It was a big night and a much-needed one for Jr Reign goalkeeper Josh Henson. His total of 33 saves was the second-highest amount he has had this season, and the Jr Reign needed every single one of them to walk out of Bakersfield with a win. On a personal level, it was a much-needed return to form after a couple of previous uncharacteristic performances.

Henson now has a 14-4 record, two shutouts, a 2.44 GAA, and a 0.912 save percentage through 18 games. Compare that to last season’s 11-4 record, zero shutouts, 3.22 GAA, and 0.897 save percentage through 17 games, and it is easy to see just how far he has come.
