Alumni Spotlight: Baden Powell

The Ontario Jr. Reign's primary objective is player development on and off the ice.

Baden Powell, a 5 '10 Dynamic, 2-way D-man from Calgary, Alberta Canada, was a pivotal force for the Jr. Reign team that made a run to Nationals during the 2023-2024 season. In that campaign, Powell tallied 16 goals and 14 assists for 30 points.

Powell had a slow start to the campaign, but credited the teams three rules to find his footing throughout the season.

“The three rules of team first, get better every day and have fun,” Powell said. “I still remember those, because it's so simple, but so important, and so I think that was a big key to helping carry us through the season, especially playoffs.”

Along with the on ice success he mentioned his appreciation for the community work that the Ontario Jr. Reign involves themselves throughout the year.

“We were involved in a lot of volunteer work, which I enjoyed,” Powell said. “It was good to help pass time, but also good to get on the resume and build that experience and connect to the community. It brought out some fans for us and created a connection of growing hockey in Southern California, which is important.”

Powell currently attends and plays D1 ACHA hockey at Purdue Northwest University, where he just concluded his freshman season.

“I think probably my favorite memory is, it's just not a worry in the world, you show up, you do your work, you grind it out with your buddies, and then you're there doing what you love in California, and I think that's the best part about it.” Powell said about what he loved the most during his time with the Jr. Reign.

Powell also enjoyed staying with the Campbell family and forged a bond that will last a lifetime.

“Youthful kids, total goofballs, reminded me of what it's like to be a kid. Blake and I could talk hockey and just kind of be dudes, then we would be the goalies in evening mini-stick games. Kaitlin made some stellar food (previous head chef) but also had lots of laughs about something silly the kids did or said. Such a welcoming family with great support to not only me but also the team and organization. I was their first billet kid and they gave me a Canadian Thanksgiving during Canadian Thanksgiving which was so awesome. They would ask so much about hockey and Canada and I was fortunate enough to skate with the kids and help them learn about the game. I could joke around and laugh with them but also rely on them to help me with what I need. I am so grateful for that family and everything they did for me. I still keep in contact with them and text about what the kids are doing. They also still watch my games and will often text me about that which is pretty cool to have that continued support. Once again, so thankful for that family and how they welcomed me and treated me.”
